Commitment to Sustainability at the Barcelona Marathon

The Zurich Marató Barcelona is proud to be an event that celebrates not only effort and personal achievement, but also respect for the environment. As we move towards a more sustainable future, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our race by adopting initiatives that promote sustainability at every step. Below, we share the actions we are implementing to make this marathon a greener and more responsible event:

  • TMB Public Transport and Secure Bicycle Parking: To facilitate access to the Barcelona Marathon and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation, we encourage the use of public transport. Participants and attendees can benefit from a free journey on TMB (Barcelona Metropolitan Transport) public transport, including the metro, buses, and trams, thus promoting a more efficient and less polluting mode of transport. In this way, we aim to minimize traffic and emissions, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable city. Furthermore, during the Expo, a secure bicycle parking service will be available, encouraging personal bicycle transport as an eco-friendly and practical option.
  • Reusable Material T-shirts: As part of our commitment to waste reduction and the circular economy, the official Zurich Marató Barcelona T-shirts are made with reusable materials, guaranteeing quality and sustainability in their production.
  • Reusable Finisher and Participant Bags: The finisher bag is an essential item for all participants, but in our ongoing effort to reduce plastic use, we’ve designed a reusable bag. Besides being practical for carrying your personal belongings, this bag is designed to be useful in your daily life, thus avoiding unnecessary waste. We’ve also implemented a participant bag, distributed at the Expo, which follows the same principles of sustainability and reuse, ensuring that all materials are environmentally friendly.
  • Refreshments in cardboard cups: In our commitment to reducing waste, the cups used at refreshment stations will be made of cardboard, becoming a single, easily recyclable waste product. In this way, we minimize our environmental impact and promote the use of biodegradable materials.
In 2026, an estimated total of 765,000 single-use paper and cardboard cups were used!
  • Sound Limiter: To protect the health of participants, residents, and wildlife, we have implemented a sound limiter at the start and finish lines. This system ensures that the noise levels generated by the speakers do not exceed the limits established by local regulations, creating a healthier and more environmentally friendly atmosphere.
  • Sustainable Generators: All generators used at the start and finish of the Zurich Marató Barcelona are electric, significantly reducing polluting emissions. The other generators used in the race run on CO2-free fuels, ensuring a lower environmental impact during the event.

Other Sustainable Initiatives:

– Material Recycling: Recycling points will be set up at different locations at the start and finish, where participants and attendees can deposit waste separately, promoting recycling and proper management of materials.

– Sustainable Supplies: Our supplies are designed not only to be more environmentally friendly, but also to be healthy and locally sourced. We use local and seasonal products, minimizing the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and supporting the local economy.

– Carbon Offsetting: With the aim of being as environmentally responsible as possible, we are working on a carbon offsetting program for the emissions generated by the event. This includes planting trees and investing in renewable energy projects.

In short, the Barcelona Marathon is not only a top-level sporting event, but also a commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. With these initiatives and many others, we hope to continue moving towards a greener race, promoting environmental awareness among all participants.
